Topic: Europe, Scenarios for Its Future. Analysis and prospects of COVID-19. UM Faculty: Joaquin Roy, Jean Monnet Chair/University of Miami European Union Center When: August 5, 2020. Recording available on: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC33CmgTDCrAxL991UO86uIQ/featured The following text was provided by Professor Nikola M. Zivkovic from el Tecnologico de Monterrey: Paolo Vacca is one of the most engaged activists promoting and fighting for the idea of further integration and federalization of the European Union I have ever met. He has been dedicated to this call for decades, first in the Young European Federalists, and then in the Union of European Federalists where he has occupied various positions, including serving as its Secretary General (one of the best in the UEF’s history). Sonja Stojanovic Gajic is one of the most prominent civil society activists and think-tankers in Serbia and South-East Europe. For years she has been leading one of the best think-tanks in the Balkans and beyond, the Belgrade Center for Security Policy. Actually she is the one who manage to lead the organization to this success acclaimed by various organization. Lately she has been expanding her activities even further towards Eastern Europe and working with various Latin America organizations. In 2019 she received award as The Person of the Year by the OSCE. Piotr Maciej Kaczyński has an amazing career as a productive thinker on various aspects of European affairs. As a liberal think-tanker, consultant, lecturer and activists he built his career for years in Brussels working for the CEPS and as a political advisor in the European Parliament, while currently he is based in Warsaw where he leads the battle against anti-European policies and sceptics, to put it softly, and is very present in Polish and European media. Joaquín Roy is a Jean Monnet Professor and Director of University of Miami European Union Center of Excellence. He is a very prolific writer, passionate about the European Union and one of the stars “europeistas” – that’s how we call in this part of the world experts on the European affairs. As the AMEI’s President Damaso Morales puts it, Professor Roy is a real EU guru. Zirahuén Villamar is a Mexican diplomat currently working in the Mexican embassy in Germany, Berlin. But next to his diplomatic career, he is one of the leading Mexican experts on German politics and its relations with Mexico and Latin America. Before joining the foreign service, he has been extensively writing about his area of expertise and he is often invited as a speaker in various international forums. Freshly PhD graduated from the Free University of Berlin, the hope of all of us in Mexico is that his much-admired academic career will not suffer too much due to his diplomatic obligations. Europe Day, held every May 9, is an annual celebration of peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historic declaration delivered in 1950 by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in Paris. The proposal, considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union, set out new ideas that would eventually form political cooperation in Europe and make war among Europe’s nations unthinkable.
The ideas were originally crafted by Jean Monnet, a French political economist and diplomat who is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the European Union.

EUSA Fifteenth Biennial Conference | May 4-6, 2017 | Miami
Sixty years after the Treaty of Rome, regional integration has profoundly transformed the economies, polities and societies of Europe. Although the European Union is more central than ever to the domestic life of its member states, it has never appeared so fragile. President Jean-Claude Juncker described his tenure as the European Commission’s “last chance,” faced with the “polycrisis” of a dysfunctional Eurozone, a catastrophic refugee conundrum, the unpicking of the Schengen area, and the rise of nationalist movements. In the era of the “constraining dissensus,” no one is indifferent to the EU.

The cases of Catalonia, Scotland, and others Note: September 11 is the National Day of Catalonia. Plans for a referendum for independence are debated. The United Kingdom may face similar challenge. Other substates/regions have been contemplating secession. Meanwhile, European identity and citizenship are concepts under close scrutiny. With the role of the European Union under questioning, observers must pay due attention to these related issues.
